Orlando Pirates star called up to Nigeria squad ahead of 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers

WHAT HAPPENED?

On Tuesday, the Nigerian Football Federation announced the immediate appointment of German coach Bruno Labbadia.

He replaced Finidi George, who managed the team for four matches earlier this year.

On the same day, Labbadia’s 23-man team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers was announced, featuring Orlando Pirates defender Olisa Ndah and Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Nigeria’s football legend George succeeded Portuguese José Peseiro, who left after his contract expired. Peseiro had guided Nigeria to this year’s Nations Cup final, where they lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in February.

This role marks Labbadia’s first coaching position outside Germany, where he has managed clubs like Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburger SV, VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg, and Hertha BSC. His most recent role was a brief five-month stint with Stuttgart, which ended in April last year.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR NIGERIA?

The Super Eagles will begin their Afcon qualifying campaign with a Group D tie at home to neighbours Benin in Uyo on September 7th.

Three days later, they will take on Rwanda, on September 10th.
